Penn State Scranton Men’s Soccer Welcomes Talented Class of 2029
Coach Denney’s third season brings momentum, experience, and an influx of high-level recruits
SCRANTON, Pa. – When Head Coach Bob Denney arrived at Penn State Scranton in 2023, he inherited a rebuilding program. In just two seasons, the Lions have gone from a one-win campaign (1-10-2 in 2023) to a competitive 6-8-1 mark in 2024, and the program's trajectory is pointing sharply upward. Now entering his third year, Denney is welcoming an incoming class that blends talent, leadership, and competitive experience—setting the stage for what could be the most exciting season in recent memory.
The Class of 2029 features eight freshmen from successful high school and travel programs across Pennsylvania and beyond:
Samuel Piatt – Back/Midfielder, Bloomsburg Area HS
A 2024 starter and captain, Piatt also competed for the STN North Penn Travel Soccer team alongside new PSU Scranton teammates Justin Pegg, Thomas Kraintz, and James Stephens.
"Samuel is an excellent and very versatile soccer player and a leader on and off the field," said Denney. "A true two-way player, Sam will make both our offense and defense better."
Justin Pegg – Midfielder/Back, Bloomsburg Area HS
A five-time Player of the Match in 2024, Pegg led Bloomsburg in scoring (11 goals, 6 assists) and earned PA Heartland Athletic Conference All-Star honors. He also played for STN North Penn.
"Justin is a playmaker who impacts the game all over the field," Denney said.
Thomas Kraintz – Goalkeeper, Millville HS
A First Team All Mid-Penn selection, Kraintz posted a remarkable 0.5 goals-against average and seven saves per game for a 15-win Millville team that reached the district playoffs. Chosen by 22 schools, he ultimately committed to PSU Scranton.
Former coach Peter Morisco praised his "leadership, dedication, and ability to be the best player on and off the pitch," a sentiment echoed by Denney:
"I couldn't have said it any better, Coach Morisco! That's why we wanted Thomas playing for our team."
James Stephens – Winger/Striker, Hughesville HS
With 10 goals, 8 assists, and three Player of the Match honors, Stephens was a key offensive threat in high school while also starring on the basketball court. A member of the STN North Penn B19 travel team.
"James will add size, skill, and a knack for making plays, especially on restarts," Denney said.
Trisdyn Fleetwood – Back/Midfielder, Bloomsburg Area HS
Fleetwood was a senior captain and PA Heartland All-Star who anchored his team's defense.
"I expect Trisdyn to play a vital role for our backline and be a key part of our defense," Denney noted.
Ryan Brescia – Striker/Winger, Honesdale HS
A three-year starter and 2024 captain, Brescia was one of Honesdale's leading scorers the past two seasons. Former teammate of PSU Scranton captain Jack Eisele.
"Ryan can score from anywhere on the field and adds real depth to our attack," Denney said.
William 'Billy' Hogan – Winger/Back, Kennett HS
Captain of one of southeastern Pennsylvania's top programs and veteran of FC Delco, Unity, and PA Rush.
"Billy has a tremendous soccer IQ and can play any position. He's the ultimate team player," Denney said.
Liam Edwards – Goalkeeper/Back, Winter Spring HS (FL)
A senior year standout with 240 saves (top 10 nationally), 5 shutouts, and a 0.88 GAA, Edwards helped his team to 14 wins and a district playoff berth.
"Liam has the heart of a Lion and the bravery of a Lion Tamer. His intensity will inspire our team," Denney said.
With this mix of skill, leadership, and competitive drive, Denney sees the program ready to turn the corner.
"We've built a core of returning players who know our system and culture, and now we're adding a recruiting class that will push us to new heights," he said. "We're ready to compete."
The Lions kick off their 2025 season this fall with high expectations—and a roster built to deliver.
