DeWolfe Makes Program History with PSUAC First Team Selection

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State University Athletic Conference announced its year-end baseball awards on Thursday afternoon and Scranton made the list of top performers this season. Sophomore infielder, Mike DeWolfe (Gibson, Pa./Mountain View) earned First Team PSUAC All-Conference honors and Penn State Scranton teammates Zach Benson (Eynon, Pa./Valley View) and Guy Mushow (Carbondale, Pa./Carbondale) both earned honorable mention laurels.

DeWolfe, a newcomer to the team for 22-23, produced one of the top offensive seasons in recent history, becoming the program's first all-conference selection to be named to first team.

Leading the team in hits, runs scored and RBI, DeWolfe recorded 38 hits, six which have gone for extra bases, including three triples and season-best 3-for-5 performance with a homerun against Wilkes Barre on April 2.

DeWolfe also stole 23 bases in 28 attempts, good for third in the PSUAC, while producing a 0.381 on-base percentage and a 0.403 slugging percentage. Adding to his first team selection stats, DeWolfe posted an impressive 0.910 fielding percentage this spring.

Sophomore Zach Benson played 32 of 38 games this spring as the team's primary first baseman. He had a career high 29 hits, eight of which went for extra bases, and he leads the team in batting average, recording 0.326 on the season with 21 RBI. With a 0.411 on-base percentage, a 0.449 slugging percentage, and a career best in the field, with a 0.990, Benson earned his first post season award for the Scranton Lions.

Freshman Guy Mushow served in various roles for Scranton, including as a starting outfielder and catcher this season. He had 25 knocks that brought in 9 runs, including 7 doubles. In addition to stealing 12 bases, Mushow recorded a 0.386 slugging percentage, a 0.400 on-base percentage and posted a 0.889 fielding percentage in 2023, earning him a spot on the honorable mention list.

In addition, senior Mark Longo (Throop, Pa./ Mid Valley) received the John Fritz Sportsmanship Award. Named after former PSUAC Commissioner John Fritz, the sportsmanship award is given to one player from each team in the league who best displays the core values of the league and sportsmanship to teammates and opponents throughout the season. Longo, a four-year starter and team captain, tallied 16 hits, stole 13 bases and recorded a 0.951 fielding percentage with two wins and two saves on the mound in his senior season.
