DUNMORE, Pa. - After a long 34 day holiday and end of semester break, the Penn State Scranton Lady Lions basketball team kicked-off their 2024 schedule by dropping a 75-48 home tilt against conference foe Penn State Greater Allegheny on Friday night. With the defeat, the Lions from Scranton see their overall record move to 4-9 and they are 0-7 in the all-important league play schedule.

After a tight first quarter that saw Scranton trail by just a mere point, Allegheny seized back control of the contest and took a nine point, 35-26, advantage into the half-time break in the action. After outscoring Scranton 19-11 in the third period, the road warriors from Allegheny stretched out their lead to 17 points, 54-37, heading into the fourth and final frame. In the fourth stanza, Allegheny outscored Scranton 21-11 to capture their dominant 27 point triumph by game's end.

Scranton had the dynamic freshmen duo of Lexi Corby and Jay Contorno lead the way with their impressive double digit scoring performances. Corby tallied a team-high 15 points on a highly efficient 6-11 shooting from the field, made her only three point attempt of the night, to go along with her trio of rebounds, and an assist to boot in her 37-minutes on the court. Last but certainly not least, Contorno put up 10 points, going 2-5 from beyond the arc, a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe, to go along with four boards, a hat trick of assists, and a pair of steals while playing all 40-minutes of the ball game.

Meanwhile, Allegheny had a trio of players score in double figures in the battle, as Abby Henderson, Tomisha Pierce, and Lauren Harris set the pace offensively for their squad. Henderson notched a stalwart double-double with her game-high 24 points and 22 rebounds, shot 10-17 from the floor, picked up five steals, three blocks, and added an assist for good measure in her 36-minutes of stellar play. Pierce also put up 24 points, shooting 11-23 from the field, made a three pointer, grabbed seven boards, an assist, and a steal in her 40-minutes on the floor. Finally, Harris had 15 points on 6-13 shooting, to go along with her quartet of assists, a trio of rebounds, and a pair of steals on defense in her 39-minutes of game action.

Now long-time head coach Tom McIntyre and his 4-9 Penn State Scranton Lady Lions basketball squad will look to bounce back and snap their mini three game losing streak and capture their first conference victory of the hoops season when they next host league rival Penn State Du Bois in a Saturday afternoon matinee, with tip-off time scheduled for a 1pm start.
