Lackawanna Trail's Megan Gatto commits to Lady Lions

Dunmore, PA – Lackawanna Trail point guard Megan Gatto has committed to Penn State Scranton to continue her academic and athletic careers with the Scranton Lady Lions beginning this fall.

Gatto was a key player for the Trail Girl's Basketball team since her freshman season.  At point, Gatto was a top scorer for the squad that made it to district semi-finals this past year.  In her senior season, Megan averaged 13 points per game and shot an impressive 74% from the free throw line earning her LIAA All-Star Division IV 1st Team accolades, team MVP and was named Top Offensive Player.

Her defensive game was also noticed by Scranton Lady Lions long-time Head Coach Tom McIntyre, "Megan's defense is going to help us in the transition game," he commented. "She has good ball awareness with good hands. She will have many steals that we hope will add to points at the other end of the floor."

Under the tutelage of Lackawanna Trail Assistant Coach Mallory Griggs, Megan will follow in her coach's footsteps as a multi-sport athlete on the Scranton campus. Griggs, formerly Mallory Pencek, is a standout alumna for the Scranton Lady Lions on the court and softball field.  Earning PSUAC and USCAA conference awards, Mallory was also honored with the prestigious John S. Egli Award for Outstanding Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2009. Following her collegiate career, Griggs served as the Penn State Scranton Assistant Women's Basketball Coach to Bob Thompson during the 2009-2010 season before eventually moving on to Lackawanna Trail where she teaches physical education.

In addition to her basketball prowess, Gatto will also be playing volleyball and softball for the Scranton Lady Lions.  A center fielder at Trail, Megan finished her senior season in the first round of playoffs this year, batting .322 with 19 hits, 16 runs scored and 4 RBIs.  Megan is looking forward to playing to her full potential at Penn State, entering in the fall to major in Mechanical Engineering.
