Scranton Loses a Nail-Biter to Williamson

By: Ross Turetsky, Penn State Scranton Athletics

On a Tuesday evening on the pitch, the visiting Penn State Scranton Lions men's soccer squad lost by the slimmest of margins, 1-0, against non-conference foe Williamson. With this heart breaking defeat, Scranton sees their overall record fall to 1-7-1 and in the all-important league play schedule they stay pat at 1-2-1 with just four regular season games remaining, two home and two road contests, on their 2023 campaign.

After both teams were held scoreless during the deadlocked first half of play, Williamson scored a thrilling goal very late in the second half with just mere seconds left before the game's final buzzer sounded to have the road warriors from Scranton's hopes fall a little short of earning a hard earned tie. Williamson's Dylan Beaver found the back of the net, assisted by Jonathan Illing, to notch the game winning score at the 89:15 mark with just 45-seconds left in regulation play.

The Lions from Scranton's two shots on goal in the match came of the feet of dynamic duo freshmen Will Nagy and Ryan Livolsi, as overall the team took six shots on the day.

On the goaltending side of things, Scranton's stalwart freshman goalkeeper Ethan Lovelace was stellar in net as he turned aside a near perfect nine out of the whopping ten shots on goal he faced while playing the game's entire 90-minutes of pulse-pounding action between the pipes. Meanwhile, for Williamson they had their net-minder Michael Hegarty go the distance in goal and pitching a victorious shutout while stopping both shots he faced from the Lions.

Now first-year head coach Robert Denney and his 1-7-1 Penn State Scranton men's soccer ball club will look to bounce back and snap their mini two game losing streak when they next host conference rival Penn State York this upcoming Saturday afternoon in the electric city, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm.
