West Scranton's Carvalho commits to Scranton Lions Soccer

DUNMORE, Pa. – Raphael Carvalho, a 2021 graduate of West Scranton High School, has signed with the Penn State Scranton Men's Soccer team and will join the Lions this fall as a freshman forward and left wing.

As a forward for the Invaders, Raphael was a leader on the field, serving as team captain and earning Offensive Player of the Year. With a powerful leg, Carvalho can be a threat in and outside the box, scoring in victories over Mid Valley and Western Wayne, and netting 28-yard goal against a match with Old Forge. Raphael also racked up assists in victories over Western Wayne and Montrose.

Raphael committed to Penn State Scranton after talking to Head Coach Joe Baltrusaitis. "I'm impressed by his desire to play for Penn State and his willingness to improve in all aspects of his game," commented Baltrusaitis, who is in his 8th year leading the Scranton Lions.  An offensive leader, Carvalho will join the team in August. "He knows how to put himself in a position to score and creates space between himself and the defender," Men's Soccer captain Deyniel Desarden mentioned of his new teammate, "he has a great pace, but more importantly, he's a great person to be on the field with."

Raphael, who will major Biology this fall, was also a West Scranton starting wrestler, likes to customize shoes, has dreams of going to medical school and wants to use his game to bring people closer and bring them happiness and help achieve team goals.
