PSU Lady Lions Lose a Nail Biter to Bryant and Stratton-Albany

By Ross Turetsky

Dunmore, PA-

On Tuesday night the Penn State Scranton Lady Lions dropped a hard fought, thrilling non-conference basketball contest to the visiting Bryant and Stratton-Albany Bobcats 63-59 that went right down to the final buzzer of play. The Lady Lions came into the ball game riding high, after snapping a three game losing streak last Friday evening with a solid 65-60 conference road victory over Penn State New Kensington. However, Penn State would get off to a slow start at home and trailed by double digits 26-12 after one quarter of play. From then on, the Lady Lions would come roaring back showing great resiliency and outscored the Bobcats for the rest of the game by a total of ten points, 47-37, as they had the scoring advantage in each of the next three quarters of play, 18-12, 16-14, and 13-11 respectively.

Penn State was led by junior, Crestwood high school product, guard Alyssa Cuono who scored a game-high 18 points, connecting on three deep shots from beyond the three point line and scoring half of her points from the charity stripe, to go along with three assists, and eight rebounds in her stellar all-around game. The Lady Lions also had two other key contributors who scored double digits in the ball game, in junior dynamic duo guards Danielle Powell and Jessica Berger. Powell accounted for 11 points to go along with her five boards. Meanwhile, Berger had a double-double in the contest with her stalwart 11 points and team high 12 rebounds.

Bryant and Stratton-Albany with the road victory snapped a nine game losing streak in their inaugural season of play to improve to a 4-13 record. The Bobcats were led by three key contributors, Madison Perez, Kiara Sweeney, and Lauren Feldman. Perez scored a team high 18 points, while Sweeney added a solid 12 points. Feldman let her powerful presence known inside the paint, as she contributed 14 points, all coming down low, near the basket, to go along with her six boards, and four blocks.

Now head coach Tom McIntyre and his Penn State Scranton Lady Lions will look to bounce back and capture their third win of the season on a busy weekend that sees them play two home integral conference opponents, Friday night at 6pm against Penn State Du Bois, and Saturday afternoon at 1pm against Penn State Greater Allegheny.
