BASKETBALL BANKS WINS IN PITTSBURGH

By Mar Tsakonas

This weekend the men's and women's basketball teams hit the road for a 2 game road trip against PSU Dubois and PSU Greater Allegheny. Going into the weekend the women were off to one of their best starts to the season. On Friday they hoped to continue their hot start against PSU Dubois and they didn't disappoint. In the first-half the Lady Lions jumped out to a big lead, 26-6 before Dubois started to try and chip away at the lead. At the half Scranton was up 35-24, led by Danielle Segilia with 12 points and Kayla Cavanaugh with 9 points. As the second-half got underway PSU Dubois came out firing getting as close as 5 points before the Lady Lions from Scranton put the game away with a final score of 73-62. PSU Scranton was led by Danielle Segilia with 21 points. Kayla Cavanaugh finished with 18 points, Kim Madensky and Jess Segilia also added 10 and 13 points of their own in the win.

The men followed the women also taking on PSU Dubois and got out to a slow start but started to heat up on offense in a 9-0 hole. As the half progressed the Lions from Scranton cut the deficit to one before taking the lead by one. At the half the Lions were down 39-32. They were led by DJ Davis with 12 points and closely followed by Kwame Simmons with 10 points. The second-half seemed to be slipping away as Dubois came out of the locker room with momentum and picked up where they left off but Scranton kept pushing. 9 minutes remaining in the game it looked as though Dubois was going to walk off the court with the win until Scranton started to fire back cutting into the lead that was as high as 12 points. Down two with less than two minutes remaining the Lions tied the game 72-72 and would eventually take the lead and hold on to it coming away with the three point win, 77-74. The Lions were led by Kwame Simmons with 26 points and DJ Davis with 17 points. Also Shane Letthand and Hasiin Dixon added 13 points each in the victory.

On Saturday they laced up their shoes again to face-off against PSU Greater Allegheny to conclude their road trip. The Lady Lions hit the floor first to try to keep their winning streak alive, going shot for shot with Greater Allegheny in the first-half but still found themselves down 39-28. As the second-half got underway Scranton battled back getting as close as 5 points before PSU Greater Allegheny pulled out the win, 73-59 handing the Lady Lions their second loss in conference play. The women would end up finishing the weekend 1-1 giving them an overall record of 4-3 and 2-2 in the conference.

The men took the court next hoping to fare better than the women. Both teams got off to a slow start before they got started. When they finally heated up the game was very close as they went shot for shot and the lead would change hands multiple times. At the half the Lions from Scranton found themselves down by three, 33-30. The second-half was just as close as the first with both teams playing good defense and shooting well. As the half went on the Lions took the lead and would not relinquish it coming away with the win, 68-56. The men finished the weekend 2-0 improving their overall record to 7-3 and 3-2 in the conference.
