Mulvey steps up to lead Scranton's women's soccer

Dunmore, PA - Penn State Scranton Athletics appointed Dennis Mulvey to rejuvenate its women's soccer program for the 2019-2020 season and the former men's assistant coach has his sights set high.  The women's program, which began varsity competition in the PSUAC (Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference) in 2015, had a rocky start.

The program competed as a club team in 2014 to prepare for the following season of conference competition under then Head Coach Marissa Duffy.  After the first year of PSUAC play, however, the women's team lost Duffy to a new position at University Park before the next fall season began.  With no head coach and struggling to reassemble, the women were offered positions on the 2017 Men's Soccer team while the search for a new head coach was underway.

It was then that Mulvey got to know many of the women's players and developed a great relationship with the team. Mulvey, along with Head Men's Soccer Coach Joe Baltrusaitis, then took on the task of recruiting both male and female players and entered the 2018 season coaching both teams as separate programs.

The 2018 Women's Soccer season had a promising start under the tutelage of both Baltrusaitis and Mulvey, with a 4-3 overtime loss to Penn State Schuylkill, on the road. The weather was a force to be reckoned with, however, as both teams struggled to get games in during record setting rains all over the state.

At the conclusion of the 2018 season, Athletic Director Jeff Mallas officially appointed Mulvey, who spent the last three seasons as the Assistant Men's Soccer coach alongside Coach Baltrusaitis, to lead the women's program into the new year.

Mulvey is the founder of the Lackawanna Trail Youth Soccer League where he served as league president for two years and a coach for two years. Dennis also assisted Athletic Director Jeff Mallas with his Annual Youth Soccer Camp for many summers on the Penn State Scranton campus.

A graduate in Business from Chabot College in Hayward, CA, Dennis also served in the United States Navy for four years as a Cook Third Class. Coach Mulvey currently resides in Factoryville, PA with his wife Marilee and son Christopher.
