Athletic Renovations celebrated at recent dedication

DUNMORE, PA- On Thursday, May 21, 2015, Penn State Scranton revealed its new baseball, softball and soccer facilities during a dedication ceremony, phase one of a three phase athletic renovation project. The baseball field, named after former Penn State quarterback and graduate of West Scranton High School Matt McGloin, was renovated and now features bullpens, new dugouts, a batting cage and a scoreboard. The campus's first softball field, named after UGI Utilities, neighbors the baseball field and also includes bullpens, a scoreboard and a batting cage. Both fields share a field house are equipped with new bleachers for each field. The soccer field received a facelift as well and was resurfaced and also received new bleachers and a scoreboard.

 

During the dedication ceremony softball and baseball players lined the entrance of the tent greeting and handing out programs to the 100 plus in attendance. Next, Maria Russoniello, Director of Development at Penn State Scranton, Jeff Mallas, Athletic Director at Penn State Scranton, John Fritz, PSUAC Conference Commissioner, Paul McGloin Sr., father of Matt McGloin, Bob Beard, President and CEO of UGI Utilities, Inc., and Dan Deleo, student-athlete at Penn State Scranton, all gave remarks about the renovation project. Also adding to the remarks was Matt McGloin himself in a video clip sent from Oakland Raiders training camp.

 

Following this part of the ceremony the attendees, athletes and coaches made their way down to the fields for the ribbon cutting ceremony and first pitches on each field. Bob Beard cut the ribbon for the UGI Utilities softball field and Paul and Cathy McGloin cut the ribbon for the Matt McGloin baseball field. Bob Beard and Paul McGloin Jr. also threw out the first pitch on the softball and baseball fields bringing the dedication ceremony to a close.

 

Penn State Worthington Scranton's teams hope to begin utilizing the new fields starting in the 2015-2016 season in August.
