Gaik, DeLeo Named Academic Athletes of the Year

Dunmore, PA- The Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter will honor two student athletes at its 37th annual dinner at Fiorelli Catering in Peckville, PA on May 5, 2015.  Penn State defensive coordinator, Bob Shoop, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s event.  The chapter will also honor its Alumnus of the Year: Lackawanna County Controller, Gary DiBileo.  Mr. DiBileo, of Scranton, graduated from Penn State in 1978 with a bachelor degree in business marketing.  In addition to Coach Shoop, Steve Jones, the voice of Penn State Football and Basketball, will be the toast master.

Our male student athlete is Daniel DeLeo.  Daniel, son of Dana and Helene DeLeo and the youngest of four children, is a graduate of Valley View High School, class of 2013. While there, he was a four year member of the boys’ soccer and track teams, National Honor Society, student council, and participated in high school plays. At Penn State, he is a member of the men’s soccer team, this year serving as captain, and named Player of the Week at Penn State Worthington Scranton.  Daniel is also a student orientation leader and Lion Ambassador. He has received the Alfred P. Cioti Memorial Scholarship and the Walter Weber Memorial Award in Theater and Special Communications.  In addition, Daniel has been on the PSU Dean’s list and was awarded the USCAA National All-Academic team award. His major is Administration of Justice with a minor in Security Risk Analysis. He would like a career with the FBI or Homeland Security upon completion of his education at University Park.

Our female student athlete is Kim Gaik.  Kim, an honors graduate of North Pocono High School, is a sophomore at Penn State Worthington Scranton.   While at North Pocono, she was a member of the cross-country, rifle, and track & field teams.  At Penn State, she is a member of the women’s cross-country team.  Kim is also a member of the campus honors program, and has made the PSU Dean’s list each of her semesters at Penn State.  In addition, she has received the PSUAC Academic All-Conference award and the PSUAC Women’s Cross-Country First Team All-Conference Award.  Kim is a double major in Information Sciences Technology (IST) and Accounting.  She plans to work as a business systems analyst after completing her education at Penn State.
