PSU Scranton Extends Open Rec Hours for Spring 2020

DUNMORE, PA - In an effort to cater to a growing and changing student body, the Penn State Scranton Athletic department has extended their open recreation hours for the 2020 spring semester.  The Multi-Purpose Building, which houses a weight room, cardio room and courts, will now stay open until 10:00 PM on weekday nights.  This is a three hour increase from their normal 7:00 PM closing time to help cater to those wanting to work on their fitness later at night after classes and work.  They are also adding some weekend hours.

"It's something we have been talking about ever since The Common's started filling up with students next door," said Sara Rinkunas, Coordinator of Athletic Programs, "we were seeing more students in the immediate area who wanted to use the facility.  I think it will be mutually beneficial for both students and the campus to be engaged with each other past normal operating hours."

Although the extended hours during the week will see more late-night lifters, the biggest change will be the new weekend hours.  The MPB (Multi-Purpose Building) was previously closed on weekends, when most varsity athletic events would take place. After working to train more student staff, the department is excited about their new Saturday hours, opening at 10:00 AM and closing their doors at 4:00 PM.  During some of the extended hours, varsity games and practices may be taking place, requiring the use of the main court area.  During this time, use of the weight and cardio rooms will be available.  All varsity practices and games are posted online at www.psuscrantonathletics.com.

"We are hoping this will bring out students who couldn't utilize the facility previously, due to conflicts with class or their jobs," commented Rinkunas who currently manages a 10-person student-staff that will help the transition to later hours. "The students who work in the gym are amazing! Their dedication to the facility and the department have helped make this possible."

February 3, 2020 will be the first day the extended hours will be in place, with both administrators and student-staff available for assistance with weight machines, cardio equipment and the locker room.  Students, faculty and staff at Penn State Scranton are welcome to use the facility for free, as well as having the opportunity to bring one guest along with them.

"We ask that those using the facility sign themselves and their guests in and out as they arrive and finish working out.  Respect goes a long way while working on bettering yourself physically, like re-racking your weights, keeping personal music at an appropriate level, and wiping down what you use for the next person," Sara said.

With flu season underway, the staff in the gym is increasing awareness about health and safety, including using the gym wipes and cleaner provided to open recreation participants.  Wiping down machines and cardio equipment when finished using them helps prevent the spread of viruses.

Any student, faculty or staff member interested in utilizing the facility also can check out a locker free of cost in the lower level locker rooms, which also provides showers for after a workout.  To learn more about the extended hours, checking out a locker or building a fitness plan with the available equipment, see any athletic administrator or student-staff member.
